The Other Side

Prologue

Everyone knows what happens at the end of the rainbow. There's a pot of gold, and everything is happy and cheerful. Wherever the rainbow ends is suddenly brighter, as if all evil is gone from that place.

But what of the other end? For there have to be two ends. Where does the rainbow come from? Where do all the colors come from?

Some believe that there isn't another end to the rainbow. They think of it as magic, the kind we shouldn't question lest harm befall us. There are those who believe that there is another end, and it is just as happy there. Nothing can go wrong under a rainbow, they say.

And then there's Duncan. He says that even though one end of the rainbow is happy, the other is dark and dismal. It is the place none want to go, and if they do, they've never returned.

I'm not sure what to believe. This is what keeps me awake at night, trying to find the truth in all these opinions. Grandmother says that the elusive answer is eating me alive and the only way for me to know is to see it for myself. The only problem is that she will not let me out of our sight. How am I supposed to determine the truth while being watched like a hawk?
